Info

Emotions (feelings, behaviors and body reaction) are crucial in our lives. Every day we regulate, deny, mask, and transform our emotions in different ways. The Sapienza Emotions, Regulation, and Relationships LAB using a variety of tools studies emotions and their regulation processes trough many methods: (a) questionnaires; (b) laboratory studies; (c) implicit appraisal methods; (d) behavioral assessments (e.g., coding of facial expressions); (e) measurement of physiological responses (e.g., heart rate) . We are interested in how emotions and their regulation mechanisms affect relationships, social processes, mental health and well-being. Our goal is to promote the progress of research and develop theories that expand our current knowledge of emotion regulation in order to improve the effectiveness of psychological interventions. In addition, the LAB offers psychological counseling services aimed at the individuals, couples, families, and institutions. Patrizia Velotti is director of the Emotions, Regulation and Relationships LAB and a Full Professor of Clinical Psychology in the Department of Dynamic, Clinical and Health Psychology.  She has focused her studies on emotion regulation mechanisms, with particular attention to their effect on psychopathology and relational functioning.

Her work has highlighted the role of dysregulation of negative emotions, particularly shame, in the enactment of violent behaviors (toward others and self) and has also highlighted the role of dysregulation of positive emotions in behavioral addictions. She has, in addition, highlighted the role of emotion regulation in coping with stressful events (pandemic, infertility) and in the enactment of pro-environmental behaviors.
